Gelatin created a series of sculptural “portraits”.
In each case, they dug negative heads into two blocks of Styrofoam, put them together,
and cast double-headed back-of-the-head busts which derive their formal tension from the feel of the casting material. The plaster casts were then cast, once again, in aluminum and presented on bases made out of synthetic material.
The resulting bust depicts a “mirrored,” faceless double-head, submerged in a screen that appears to be a random remnant of production. The dualistic nature of these sculptures reveals a schizoid disposition that begs an investigation of the figure’s “symptoms” and urges that we view the emergence of forms as an ensemble of tension processes.
